CHAPTER 4

After an exceptionally restless night, Sam showered and got ready for work. She took Sonny for his morning walk, dropped him off at Doreen’s and then drove to work. As promised, she arrived half an hour early. She poured herself a cup of coffee that she had missed out on at home and continued making her notes before the other members of the team showed up.

Bob knocked on her door and poked his head into the room. “You’re early. I missed you giving me a hand getting out of the car this morning,” he quipped.

“Shit happens, eh, partner?” She grinned and shooed him out of the room, aware that she had thirty minutes to finish off her task in hand. Sam emerged from the office twenty minutes later. “Morning, all. Plod on with what you were doing yesterday. I’m about to head downstairs to hold the conference—not ideal being held on a Saturday, but needs must. I doubt if the bulletin will go out until this evening. Jesus, why did I agree to hold it today? I must be nuts. And I’ll thank you not to comment on the last part.” She glared at her partner who had opened his mouth to speak.

Bob pulled an imaginary zip across his lips and then smirked. “Do you need any company down there or will you be all right in the shark-infested waters by yourself?”

“Christ, as if I wasn’t concerned enough you have to throw a remark like that into the ring.”

He grinned. “Sorry.”

“No, you’re not. Don’t lie. I’ll see you later, if I survive the mauling.”

The team shouted good luck in unison as she left the main office and descended the stairs on heavy, reluctant legs, taking the file, containing her notes and the images of the suspects and the victims, with her. Jackie was waiting for her in the room off the conference room.

“Hey, you look like death warmed up, are you sure you’re up to this?”

“Blimey, don’t say that. Maybe I should have worn some makeup today. Damn, I knew I’d forget something in my haste to get to work early.”

Jackie smiled and dug into her handbag. She withdrew some eyeshadow and blusher and proceeded to dab it on in the appropriate places on Sam’s pale face. “There you are, at least you have some colour in your cheeks now.”

“You’re amazing. Is it filling up in there?”

Jackie poked her head into the room. “Yep. Which has surprised me. I thought we were chancing our arm calling in a favour from the press on a Saturday.”

“Yeah, I had the same sinking feeling upstairs.” Sam inhaled and exhaled a few calming breaths. Her heart rate lowered enough for her to tell Jackie that she was ready. “Bloody gets me every time. I should be used to these by now. Does it ever get any easier?”

“Most officers feel the same way to begin with. You’ll be fine once you’re up there and in your stride. I won’t say the obvious, imagine them all naked, because I’ve seen what’s out there, and it ain’t pretty.
